Awesome project, very excited to start building one!
Have you considered putting the RFID chip on a daughterboard so that it can be positioned in a small space that is removed from the main shield and Arduino? Maybe another type of coaster with jacks and cables? I see that SparkFun has a breakout board that I may use for an improvised version of this. http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8423

Good idea - I should be able to make this configurable in the kegboard firmware (so long as you can give up one of the gpio already brought to the coaster).

Neato! Do you know how many of the RFID chip's pins are used? Is it just four? So maybe, run one RJ45 to the fridge coaster and another to the RFID sensor.

Actually I think it is just two: one data pin, and one (optional) reset pin.

Should be doable!
